Our Cookie Party is tomorrow (Monday). Miss Wendy will be joining us for the party. This will be our last class with parents. When we return there will be 2 other assistants in the room. Once we feel the time is right, we will remove one of the assistants. If you have concerns about separation, please speak to Betsy or Sue.

Ready Two Grow
Our Cookie Party is Tuesday from 10:45 to 11:15. The kids have been working hard to create special surprises for their family.

Three Year Old Program
We are looking forward to our Cookie Parties on Wednesday. Parents are invited to attend the last hour of class.  There will be food, fun and even surprises. The kids are proud of the gifts they made and wrapped. Special thanks this week to Jack’s Mom, Elsa Teotia, who read a book to the 3PM class.

Four Year Old Program
The kids baked and decorated cookies for their parties on Thursday. Parents are invited for the last hour of class. In addition to getting ready for the party, the classes enjoyed science with Valerie Dashiell, and Spanish with Kari Grace. Special thanks also to Tatum’s Mom, Sheila Tam, who presented a lesson on Hanukkah and Jenna’s Mom, Betsy Crosswhite, who read a book; both in the 4PM class.

KE
Congratulations are in order for our own Miss Byrd, who got engaged last week to Ian Fisher! The kids were very happy to see Byrd after her week off. On their Alphabet Adventures, the class is up to the letter “H”. That is why you will see a lengthy list of things found in Hawaii hanging on the cabinet.

Auction Update

Our annual benefit is quickly approaching.  Be sure to book your sitter for February 23!  In keeping with this year's theme, the children will all be coming home with t-shirts!    A HUGE thank you to Trinity Dad, Bill Bostrom, for designing the perfect logo!!  Everyday is a special day at TCNS!  That means, your kids can wear their shirt on Marvelous Mondays, Terrific Tuesdays, Wonderful Wednesdays, Tremendous Thursdays, or Fantastic Fridays!

4's and 5's Update

What fun we had coming back from the Thanksgiving Break! On Monday the kids made chocolate covered pretzels sprinkled with peppermint candy. Miss Laurie was extremely well prepared and this project was a blast! When the kids arrived they were each given a toy hammer and a baggie containing peppermint candies. Their job was to smash the candy! It was so fun and loud and exciting for them to make the peppermint crumbs! Miss Laurie went to the kitchen and returned with 3 plates of melted, gooey, chocolate. Once the chocolate was cool, we all sat at the 3 tables and the kids rolled their pretzels in the chocolate and sprinkled the peppermint on top. Delicioso!! (Not a typo – it’s Spanish!)
We also worked hard this week to begin decorating our classroom for our upcoming Cookie Party. Check out our beautiful wreaths and trees hanging on the bulletin boards!
On Tuesday we had a lesson from our Science Teacher, Mrs. Dashiell, who used sweet potatoes to successfully illustrate the sophisticated concept of gravity!

On Thursday Miss Kari visited us for the weekly Spanish circle-time.

The centers this week were the following:

1.  Print your first name and find a sticker that has the same beginning sound as the first letter of your name
2.  A card game that matched upper and lower case letters
3.    A card game that focused on opposites

It was a full, fun week!!  Here’s to MORE GREAT WEEKS at TCNS!!

4's and 5's Update

Life is busy for the 4’s and 5’s! If your child came home recently talking about the ear and how sound travels, you can thank Val Dashiell. She takes sophisticated concepts in science and makes them meaningful to the kids. Watch for her write-ups to come home every other Tuesday.
Miss Laurie made applesauce with the kids this week! The children had fun cutting the apples, squeezing lemons, and sprinkling the cinnamon sugar. The result was delicious!
Miss Kari came again on Thursday for a Spanish Circle Time. The children are very attentive to Kari and enjoy her songs and games.
The classes did not do Centers this past Thursday. We took advantage of what may be the last beautiful day in a while and played outside for a long time!! On the previous Thursday, the Centers were the following:
·         A worksheet asking the kids to draw 1 (uno) pumpkin all the way to 4 (cuatro) pumpkins. Most kids loved this activity and spent a lot of time on their pumpkins!
·         Practice writing names using capital and lower case letters.
·         Alphabet Bingo stressing letter sound association.
We have been learning about the different life stages of the honeybee, and dancing “bee-style” in the figure 8.  Ask your child to show you how a bee tells the other bees where the flowers are!

Mark your calendars for our first TCNS Gives Back event on November 6th.  Flyers coming via the cubbies

3's Update

We had another fun week! On Monday we made masks to hide behind when we sing our scary Halloween songs that often end with a big BOO!! (Somehow Laurie, Luanne and Kathy never manage to see the BOO coming and are always very startled! And somehow the kids never catch on to their over-acting!)
Wednesday was a delightful day! Cole’s Nana stayed with us all day.  She truly was a big help and it was obvious that she loved interacting with the kids. She is a former preschool teacher, and she read the kids a book and taught them 4 Halloween songs – that were completely new to me!  For a preschool teacher, 4 new Halloween songs is like discovering gold! Nana was impressed with the sweetness that is so evident in this class.
Wednesday was also a Music and Movement Class day with Mrs. Dashiell. We had a great time skipping and galloping and using our imaginations with Val!  Ask your child to show you what a balloon does when it is not tied at the bottom!
Thursday we made monsters, inspired by the fun book, Go Away Big Green Monster. They will be hanging in our classroom for all to enjoy! We also spent lots of time outdoors, trying to savor every moment of the beautiful day!
Our Halloween Party is on Wednesday, October 31. If you want to take photos of the kids you are welcome to do that at drop off. They often remove parts of their costumes as the day goes on!

Would you consider hosting an exchange student? Caroline is a 16 year old from Denmark who is currently attending New Trier High School and staying with a temporary family. We’re looking for a family to host Caroline for the remainder of the year. She enjoys drawing, painting, music, dancing, and even makes her own jewelry. She enjoys little kids too! Her host mom describes her as “sweet, easy-going, helpful, and funny.” CCI is a nationally accredited cultural exchange organization. 4's Update

By now the kids have met all the "specials" teachers and we are well into the routine!    Our Thursday Centers were:
1. Practice writing names using upper and lower case
2. An art/ fine motor activity, cutting out tree trunks to make trees
3. A listening activity - using a DVD - guess the animal sound you hear.

3's Are Celebrating Fall!

If there is one word you heard in Spanish this week, I'm guessing it might be manzana (apple)! We sang about manzanas, read about them, and even made paper mache apples! It took two days for everyone to make the apples, and we will paint them on Wednesday.  After that I will modge podge them to make them glossy, and the result will be a simple but beautiful treasure!! Watch for your child's treasure to come home soon!

Our highlight of the week was a visit to the TUMC pumpkin patch!  While we were there I took great photos of each child, that will be used to create a class libro (book).   Then, each child got to pick their very own pumpkin!  The TUMC pumpkin patch supports missions both locally and globally, and I am proud to support their efforts!  If you are looking to purchase pumpkins, please remember at TUMC the pumpkins go for a good cause!

Other highlights of the week include a "Leave the Room Safely Drill" (my name for a fire drill) and our first play period in the bike room!   Plus, we now use all nine jobs in the Job Chart, and do all our counting in Spanish!

Life is GOOD in the 4’s classes!!

The kids LOVE Centers Days!! Last week the centers were:
1.  What’s Missing?
2. Writing Numbers
3. A game to teach Letter Recognition and Letter Sound Association.
The kids especially love when they rotate to the next table to check out the new activity. Centers Days are a FUN way to incorporate academics!

We also started specials!! On Tuesday Valerie Dashiell presented a lesson on sound and sound waves. They were so attentive you could hear a pin drop! I understand that some kids even took the lesson home and filled glasses with different amount of water and lightly tapped tem to hear the sound they make. Way to go! Val’s science program utilizes hands on experiments to demonstrate concepts in a meaningful way. She will be working with your kids ever other Tuesday!

Each Thursday Kari Grace will present a Spanish lesson to the class.  Her “circle-time” consists of songs and games. Plus, she often surprises the kids with various props that she brings.  Kari is young and sweet and enthusiastic and a great addition to our staff!

Val’s music and movement program starts this week. Every other Wednesday Val will get our kiddos moving and shaking to music that ranges from classical to country to rock!

We also read and illustrated the classic fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin.   The children were literally shocked to discover that Rumpelstiltskin himself came and turned their straw into gold!! Quinn H. shouted, “We’re rich!!’  Oliver S. seemed to express what everyone was feeling when he said, “I always thought it wasn’t real… but it is!!”

Here’s to more great weeks at TCNS!!

TCNS e-News May 24th

TCNS e-News & Class Updates
This time of year is largely about preparing for the next step.

Life is about change, and it’s easier to embrace change when we are prepared.

Kindergarten visits at Romona and Harper went great!!  I like to point out all the things in the classrooms that are similar to Trinity and all the “cool” things we don’t have.
The 3 / 4’s spent a lot of time playing in the downstairs room.
They also enjoyed all the familiar things, as well as the new, cool things!

All the classes have spent extra time outside!!

And all the teachers have been giving the kids lots of time to “share” at the rug – meaning tell their friends something – really anything!

We stress attention and manners for the listeners, and looking at the eyes of the speaker.
What a confidence boosting experience for the kids to stand in front of the group and speak to a receptive audience!

It is voluntary, but we have lots of volunteers!
Remember, public speaking is a true life skill!

Now... for (probably ) the last time... please, make certain you have these dates on your calendar....

Friday – 9:15 am – Incoming Kindergartners visit Central.
Then we will walk to TCNS... remember.. tomorrow is Magic Day for the 4 / 5’s.
Monday – Memorial Day Parade!
Meet at St Joe’s at 10:10.  Decorate your bikes & wagons!
Tuesday – 4pm Picnic – 12:30
Wednesday – 9:15 am Incoming Kindergartners tour MacKenzie
Wednesday – 3’s picnic – 10:45 for am class & 12:30 for pm class.
Kids arrive and leave at usual time.
Thursday  - 4am picnic – 10:45
Kids - arrive at usual time
Thursday – 4pm - Very Special Moment – 2:30
Friday – 4am – Very Special Moment- 11:00
