4's and 5's Update

Life is busy for the 4’s and 5’s! If your child came home recently talking about the ear and how sound travels, you can thank Val Dashiell. She takes sophisticated concepts in science and makes them meaningful to the kids. Watch for her write-ups to come home every other Tuesday.
Miss Laurie made applesauce with the kids this week! The children had fun cutting the apples, squeezing lemons, and sprinkling the cinnamon sugar. The result was delicious!
Miss Kari came again on Thursday for a Spanish Circle Time. The children are very attentive to Kari and enjoy her songs and games.
The classes did not do Centers this past Thursday. We took advantage of what may be the last beautiful day in a while and played outside for a long time!! On the previous Thursday, the Centers were the following:
·         A worksheet asking the kids to draw 1 (uno) pumpkin all the way to 4 (cuatro) pumpkins. Most kids loved this activity and spent a lot of time on their pumpkins!
·         Practice writing names using capital and lower case letters.
·         Alphabet Bingo stressing letter sound association.
We have been learning about the different life stages of the honeybee, and dancing “bee-style” in the figure 8.  Ask your child to show you how a bee tells the other bees where the flowers are!

3's Update

We had another fun week! On Monday we made masks to hide behind when we sing our scary Halloween songs that often end with a big BOO!! (Somehow Laurie, Luanne and Kathy never manage to see the BOO coming and are always very startled! And somehow the kids never catch on to their over-acting!)
Wednesday was a delightful day! Cole’s Nana stayed with us all day.  She truly was a big help and it was obvious that she loved interacting with the kids. She is a former preschool teacher, and she read the kids a book and taught them 4 Halloween songs – that were completely new to me!  For a preschool teacher, 4 new Halloween songs is like discovering gold! Nana was impressed with the sweetness that is so evident in this class.
Wednesday was also a Music and Movement Class day with Mrs. Dashiell. We had a great time skipping and galloping and using our imaginations with Val!  Ask your child to show you what a balloon does when it is not tied at the bottom!
Thursday we made monsters, inspired by the fun book, Go Away Big Green Monster. They will be hanging in our classroom for all to enjoy! We also spent lots of time outdoors, trying to savor every moment of the beautiful day!
Our Halloween Party is on Wednesday, October 31. If you want to take photos of the kids you are welcome to do that at drop off. They often remove parts of their costumes as the day goes on!

Would you consider hosting an exchange student? Caroline is a 16 year old from Denmark who is currently attending New Trier High School and staying with a temporary family. We’re looking for a family to host Caroline for the remainder of the year. She enjoys drawing, painting, music, dancing, and even makes her own jewelry. She enjoys little kids too! 3's Are Celebrating Fall!

If there is one word you heard in Spanish this week, I'm guessing it might be manzana (apple)! We sang about manzanas, read about them, and even made paper mache apples! It took two days for everyone to make the apples, and we will paint them on Wednesday.  After that I will modge podge them to make them glossy, and the result will be a simple but beautiful treasure!! Watch for your child's treasure to come home soon!

Our highlight of the week was a visit to the TUMC pumpkin patch!  While we were there I took great photos of each child, that will be used to create a class libro (book).   Then, each child got to pick their very own pumpkin!  The TUMC pumpkin patch supports missions both locally and globally, and I am proud to support their efforts!  If you are looking to purchase pumpkins, please remember at TUMC the pumpkins go for a good cause!

Other highlights of the week include a "Leave the Room Safely Drill" (my name for a fire drill) and our first play period in the bike room!   Plus, we now use all nine jobs in the Job Chart, and do all our counting in Spanish!

Life is GOOD in the 4’s classes!!

The kids LOVE Centers Days!! Last week the centers were:
1.  What’s Missing?
2. Writing Numbers
3. A game to teach Letter Recognition and Letter Sound Association.
The kids especially love when they rotate to the next table to check out the new activity. Centers Days are a FUN way to incorporate academics!

We also started specials!! On Tuesday Valerie Dashiell presented a lesson on sound and sound waves. They were so attentive you could hear a pin drop! I understand that some kids even took the lesson home and filled glasses with different amount of water and lightly tapped tem to hear the sound they make. Way to go! Val’s science program utilizes hands on experiments to demonstrate concepts in a meaningful way. She will be working with your kids ever other Tuesday!

Each Thursday Kari Grace will present a Spanish lesson to the class.  Her “circle-time” consists of songs and games. Plus, she often surprises the kids with various props that she brings.  Kari is young and sweet and enthusiastic and a great addition to our staff!

Val’s music and movement program starts this week. Every other Wednesday Val will get our kiddos moving and shaking to music that ranges from classical to country to rock!

We also read and illustrated the classic fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin.   The children were literally shocked to discover that Rumpelstiltskin himself came and turned their straw into gold!! Quinn H. shouted, “We’re rich!!’  Oliver S. seemed to express what everyone was feeling when he said, “I always thought it wasn’t real… but it is!!”

Here’s to more great weeks at TCNS!!
